Allergenic proteins from the skin of *Mesocricetus auratus* (Golden or Syrian hamster) are recognized as significant sources of animal-derived allergens, particularly in laboratory and domestic settings. The primary allergenic protein identified is a member of the lipocalin family, known as Mes a 1. Exposure routes include inhalation (primary), direct skin contact, bites, or contaminated wounds. Symptoms can range from rhinitis and asthma to urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylaxis—especially among laboratory workers or pet owners with pre-existing atopic conditions. There is documented cross-reactivity between lipocalin allergens across different hamster species.
