Alloantigen-specific effector T cells are a subset of T lymphocytes that recognize and respond specifically to alloantigens, antigens present on cells from genetically distinct individuals of the same species. These cells play a central role in mediating immune responses against transplanted tissues, leading to graft rejection. They are a key target for therapeutic interventions aimed at preventing rejection and inducing tolerance in transplantation. They can be either CD4+ helper T cells or CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. Regulatory T cell subsets specific for alloantigens are also generated for therapeutic purposes. Approaches include CAR-T cell engineering.
