An alloreactive effector immune cell is an immune cell—most commonly a T lymphocyte, but also including B cells and natural killer (NK) cells—that mounts a response against antigens from genetically distinct individuals of the same species (alloantigens). These responses are central to phenomena such as transplant rejection, graft-versus-host disease, transfusion reactions, and certain pregnancy-related conditions. Alloreactivity describes a functional state rather than a single molecule/receptor: it encompasses any immune effectors with specificity toward non-self allelic variants within a species—most notably those involved in transplantation immunology.
