Overview

Alpha,alpha-trehalose-phosphate synthase (UDP-forming) is an enzyme that catalyzes the penultimate step in trehalose biosynthesis. It transfers a glucose moiety from UDP-glucose to D-glucose 6-phosphate, producing alpha,alpha'-trehalose 6-phosphate and UDP. Trehalose acts as an osmoprotectant and helps protect cells against environmental stresses. It is found across diverse taxa including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, insects, and plants.
