Overview

The alpha-2B adrenergic receptor (α2B adrenoceptor) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that belongs to the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor family. It is predominantly located on vascular smooth muscle and plays a key role in vasoconstriction. Activation leads to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase and a reduction in cyclic AMP levels. Polymorphisms in ADRA2B are associated with altered metabolic rate and emotional memory processing. Drugs targeting alpha-2 adrenergic receptors are used for conditions such as hypertension, though selectivity for the α2B subtype varies.

Mechanism of action

Agonist or antagonist binding leading to altered downstream signaling via G proteins and modulation of adenylyl cyclase activity. Primarily leads to inhibition of norepinephrine release and vasoconstriction.
