Overview

Alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa are G protein-coupled receptors located primarily on the smooth muscle of precapillary and postcapillary blood vessels. Activation of these receptors causes vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow and congestion. The main subtypes are alpha1-adrenoceptors and alpha2-adrenoceptors. Drugs like phenylephrine and oxymetazoline act as agonists to relieve nasal congestion. Excessive use can lead to rebound congestion.
