Overview

Alpha brain waves are rhythmic neural oscillations in the frequency range of 8 to 12 Hz, which are most prominent during periods of relaxed wakefulness with the eyes closed (StatPearls, PMID: 30285374). They originate from the synchronous electrical activity of thalamocortical neurons and serve as a mechanism for gating information processing by inhibiting task-irrelevant cortical areas (Klimesch, 1999, PMID: 10443445). Although they are not a molecular receptor or enzyme, alpha waves are frequently used as a physiological biomarker and a functional target for neuromodulatory interventions like neurofeedback and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Clinically, alterations in alpha power or frequency are observed in conditions such as ADHD, major depressive disorder, and chronic pain (PubMed, PMID: 26073105). Pharmacological agents like benzodiazepines or L-theanine are known to modulate these oscillations, typically by increasing alpha power through the enhancement of GABAergic tone. Consequently, alpha waves provide a macroscopic view of brain network dynamics rather than serving as a specific molecular site for direct drug binding.
