Target intelligence / Profile preview
Alpha-dystroglycan (α-DG) is an extracellular peripheral membrane glycoprotein that acts as a crucial link between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cytoskeleton. Synthesized from the DAG1 gene, it is heavily glycosylated, a modification essential for binding ECM proteins like laminins. This interaction provides structural support to muscle fibers and facilitates cell signaling. Aberrant glycosylation leads to α-dystroglycanopathies, a spectrum of congenital muscular dystrophies. Furthermore, α-DG serves as a receptor for several viruses, including Lassa fever virus. Its widespread expression underscores its importance in cell adhesion and tissue integrity across various organ systems.
