Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein primarily produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac during embryonic development. In fetuses, it functions as a carrier protein for various ligands. In adults, elevated AFP levels are associated with certain cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma and germ cell tumors, and is used as a tumor marker. It is also used in prenatal screening to assess the risk for certain birth defects or genetic problems.
Binds various membrane receptors and intracellular proteins; modulates responses from intracellular signaling pathways involved in cell growth regulation. Acts as enhancer or inhibitor of cellular proliferation depending on physiological/pathological context.
