Fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO)

Target
FTO
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Dioxygenase, Non-heme iron(II)/alpha-KG dependent dioxygenase
01

Overview

FTO is an alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase that catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of nucleic acids, particularly N6-methyladenosine (m6A) in RNA. It plays a critical role in energy homeostasis, adipogenesis, thermogenesis, and regulation of body mass index, and is a major genetic determinant of obesity risk. FTO is also implicated in metabolic diseases and some cancers, making it a therapeutic target.
