Alpha-mannosidase 2 is a key enzyme involved in the maturation of N-linked glycoproteins. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of specific mannose residues from oligosaccharide chains attached to asparagine residues (N-linked glycans) on glycoproteins. It specifically removes α-1,3-linked and α-1,6-linked mannoses from GlcNAcMan₅GlcNAc₂ substrates—this step is essential for converting high-mannose glycans into complex N-glycan structures. Golgi alpha-mannosidase II has been identified as a potential target for anti-cancer therapies.
