Alpha-mannosidase I is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the maturation and processing of N-linked glycans during glycoprotein biosynthesis. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of specific mannose residues from oligosaccharides, converting Man9GlcNAc2 to Man5GlcNAc2, which is essential for generating complex N-glycan structures on proteins. Mannosidase I also functions in protein folding quality control and has been shown to modulate immune cell function, specifically inhibiting naive CD4+ T cell activation. Deficiency or inhibition of mannosidases can lead to disorders such as mannosidosis.
