Alpha-sarcoglycan (SGCA)

Target
SGCA
Molecular classification
Transmembrane protein, Sarcoglycan alpha/epsilon family
01

Overview

Alpha-sarcoglycan is a transmembrane protein encoded by the SGCA gene in humans. It is a critical component of the sarcoglycan complex, which forms part of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) in muscle cell membranes. The DGC links the intracellular actin cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix, maintaining muscle fiber integrity. Mutations in SGCA cause limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2D (LGMDR3), characterized by progressive muscle weakness.
