αv Integrins
Molecular classification

Overview

The alpha-V (αv) integrin family is a group of heterodimeric cell surface receptors that play crucial roles in cell adhesion, migration, and signaling. They are composed of an αv subunit (ITGAV gene) paired with various β subunits (β1, β3, β5, β6, and β8), forming distinct integrins such as αvβ1, αvβ3, αvβ5, αvβ6, and αvβ8. These receptors bind to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins like vitronectin, fibronectin, fibrinogen, osteopontin, and laminins via RGD motifs. They mediate bidirectional signaling across the cell membrane, influencing cytoskeletal organization and gene expression. Certain members, like αvβ6 and αvβ8, regulate TGF-β activation. Their involvement in angiogenesis, fibrosis, and cancer progression makes them therapeutic targets.
