Target intelligence / Profile preview

Alpha3beta4 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The alpha3beta4 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α3β4 nAChR) is a subtype of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors highly expressed in autonomic ganglia and specific brain regions like the medial habenula and interpeduncular nucleus. It mediates fast synaptic transmission and plays a role in reward circuits and addiction-related behaviors. It is a pentamer formed from combinations of α3 and β4 subunits. The unique pharmacology of α3β4 nAChR makes it an attractive target for novel therapeutics aimed at substance use disorders, particularly nicotine addiction.
