Overview

Alphaproteobacteria is a large and diverse class of Gram-negative bacteria within the phylum Pseudomonadota. This group is of high clinical significance as it contains several genera of human pathogens that are often obligate or facultative intracellular organisms, such as Rickettsia, Brucella, and Bartonella (NCBI Taxonomy, 2024). While 'Alphaproteobacteria' is a taxonomic classification rather than a single molecular target, various enzymes and structural components within these bacteria serve as the actual targets for pharmacological intervention. For instance, tetracyclines like doxycycline are used to treat rickettsial diseases by targeting the bacterial 30S ribosome to inhibit protein synthesis (StatPearls, 2023). Additionally, this class is evolutionary important because it is widely accepted that mitochondria in eukaryotic cells originated from an endosymbiotic relationship with an ancestral alphaproteobacterium (Wikipedia, 2024).
