Overview

Alternative oxidase (AOX) is an integral membrane enzyme that functions as a terminal oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain of many organisms, including plants, fungi, protists, some animals, and certain bacteria. AOX provides an alternative pathway for electron flow by directly reducing oxygen to water using electrons from ubiquinol, bypassing complexes III and IV and not contributing to ATP synthesis. It plays a crucial role in metabolic flexibility, ROS control, and stress response. Inhibition of AOX is being explored as a potential therapeutic strategy against pathogens.
