Overview

Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), sometimes called alumina, is a white, odorless, and water-insoluble crystalline solid that occurs naturally as corundum and as the gemstones ruby and sapphire[2][3][7]. It is highly resistant to chemical attack and heat, with excellent mechanical strength and electrical insulating properties, making it widely used in ceramics, abrasives, catalysts, and electronical substrates. Alumina is amphoteric, meaning it can react with both acids and bases. The alpha form (corundum) is the most stable, exhibiting a hexagonal close-packed structure, while several metastable phases exist with varied technical applications.
