Amidohydrolases (also known as amidases) are a class of hydrolase enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of amide bonds, breaking them down into their constituent acids and amines through the addition of water. They are classified under Enzyme Commission (EC) numbers EC 3.5.1 (linear amides) and EC 3.5.2 (cyclic amides). Amidohydrolases participate in various biological processes including nucleotide metabolism, detoxification, neuronal development, and more. Many family members participate in nucleotide metabolism and some serve protective functions by breaking down toxic compounds. Amidohydrolases are drug targets due to their central metabolic roles; inhibitors can modulate biochemical pathways for therapeutic benefit.
