Epithelial Sodium Channel Alpha Subunit (ENaC α)

Target
ENaC α
Molecular classification
Ion channel, ENaC/DEG superfamily
01

Overview

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is a membrane-bound, non-voltage-gated ion channel that is highly selective for sodium ions (Na+). The alpha subunit of ENaC is encoded by the *SCNN1A* gene and is considered essential for forming an active channel at the cell surface. It plays a critical role in the regulation of sodium and water homeostasis across epithelial tissues, particularly in the kidney, lung, colon, and sweat glands. Dysfunction or mutations affecting ENaC α can lead to disorders such as Liddle syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and pseudohypoaldosteronism type I.
