Amino functional group

Molecular classification
Other (Functional group), not a protein, receptor, enzyme, or traditional target
01

Overview

The **amino functional group** (–NH₂) consists of a nitrogen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms and is one of the fundamental building blocks of amino acids, which together make up proteins[1][2][3][5][7]. In proteins, every amino acid except proline contains a primary amino group attached to the alpha carbon (the α-amino group)[7]. The amino group is basic, can participate in hydrogen bonding, and plays a central role in the formation of peptide bonds with carboxyl groups to form protein backbones. While essential to protein structure and function, the "protein amino group" itself is not considered a therapeutic target or a distinct biomolecule[1][2][5][7].
