Ammonia (NH₃)

Target
NH₃
Molecular classification
Inorganic Compound, Gas, Pnictogen Hydride, Weak Base
01

Overview

Ammonia (NH₃) is a colorless gas with a pungent odor, serving as a fundamental component in biological systems (nitrogen cycle) and various industrial processes (fertilizers, chemical synthesis). While essential in certain biological pathways, elevated levels can be toxic. It is not typically considered a direct therapeutic target, but rather a molecule whose levels are managed in the context of certain diseases.

Other names
Azane
02

Mechanism of action

Lactulose: Acidifies the colon, promoting conversion of ammonia to ammonium, which is then excreted. Rifaximin: Reduces ammonia production by decreasing the number of ammonia-producing bacteria in the gut. Benzoate: Combines with ammonia to form hippurate, which is excreted.
