Ammonium lactate

Molecular classification
Carboxylic acid salt, Organic acid and derivative, Small molecule drug
01

Overview

Ammonium lactate is the ammonium salt of lactic acid, with the formula NH₄(C₂H₄(OH)COO), and molecular weight 107.11 g/mol. It is used primarily as an active ingredient in topical medications and over-the-counter skin lotions, such as Amlactin and Lac-Hydrin, for the treatment of dry, scaly, or itchy skin conditions like xerosis and ichthyosis. Unlike true molecular targets (e.g., receptors or enzymes), ammonium lactate is not targeted by drugs but is instead itself a drug with hydrating and mild anti-bacterial properties. It is sometimes also classified as a food additive (E328), and it may cause increased skin sensitivity to sunlight.
