AMPKα1 is the catalytic α1 subunit of the heterotrimeric enzyme complex known as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK functions as a central regulator of cellular energy homeostasis in eukaryotes. It is activated in response to increased cellular AMP/ATP or ADP/ATP ratios, which signal energy stress within the cell. It regulates multiple metabolic processes through phosphorylation of downstream targets.
