AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a central regulator of cellular and whole-body energy homeostasis. It functions as an energy sensor, activated by increases in the cellular AMP/ATP ratio, and acts to restore energy balance. The alpha subunit (AMPKα) serves as the catalytic core of this heterotrimeric enzyme complex, phosphorylating key metabolic enzymes to inhibit anabolic processes and promote catabolic pathways.
