PRKAA2
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protein kinase, Serine/threonine-protein kinase, CAMK Ser/Thr protein kinases family, SNF1 subfamily
01

Overview

PRKAA2 encodes the catalytic alpha 2 subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a heterotrimeric enzyme that acts as a central energy sensor in cells. Activated in response to metabolic stress or low cellular energy, AMPK phosphorylates and inactivates key enzymes involved in lipid and cholesterol biosynthesis. It plays a crucial role in glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and myocardial energy homeostasis. It also acts as a suppressor of endoplasmic reticulum stress. Its role in hepatoblastoma is complex, functioning as a tumor-promoting factor and implicated in ferroptosis regulation.
