While the functional amylase genes (such as AMY1A, AMY1B, AMY2A) encode active enzymes involved in starch and glycogen digestion, AMYP1 contains sequence features typical of the alpha-amylase genes but is not transcribed or translated into a functional product[6][7]. Pseudogenes can sometimes have regulatory or evolutionary significance, but AMYP1 is not considered a protein, does not have a role in human physiology or disease, and has no relevance as a therapeutic target.
