Amyloid beta peptide (monomer) (Aβ)

Target
Molecular classification
Peptide, Amyloid peptide

Overview

Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide is a short polypeptide, typically 36–43 amino acids in length, derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) through sequential cleavage by β- and γ-secretases. The most common forms are Aβ40 and Aβ42, containing 40 and 42 residues respectively. These peptides are central to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease due to their propensity to aggregate into oligomers and fibrils that form amyloid plaques in the brain. In its monomeric form, Aβ is mostly unstructured, but it can transition to β-sheet structures upon aggregation. While the physiological function of monomeric Aβ remains unclear, its aggregated forms are highly neurotoxic and play a key role in Alzheimer's disease pathology.
