Amyloid-beta precursor protein messenger RNA (APP mRNA)

Overview

APP mRNA is the messenger RNA transcript encoded by the APP gene, responsible for the synthesis of amyloid-beta precursor protein. APP mRNA is best known for its role in the molecular pathology of Alzheimer's disease, as alternative splicing and expression levels of different APP mRNA isoforms are linked to amyloid plaque formation and neurodegeneration. Modulation of APP mRNA using RNA interference or antisense oligonucleotides is an investigational therapeutic strategy aiming to reduce amyloid-beta production for diseases such as Alzheimer's. APP mRNA also serves as a molecular biomarker for diagnostic and research purposes in neurodegenerative and some cancer settings.

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of APP mRNA via RNAi or antisense leads to reduced production of amyloid-beta precursor protein and subsequent decrease in amyloid-beta peptides
