Amyloid beta (Aβ) production refers to the biochemical process by which amyloid beta peptides are generated from the amyloid precursor protein (APP). This process is central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, as accumulation and aggregation of Aβ peptides in the brain form neurotoxic plaques associated with neurodegeneration. The amyloidogenic pathway involves sequential cleavage of APP by β-secretase (BACE1) and γ-secretase, resulting in the release of Aβ peptides, primarily Aβ40 and Aβ42. Modulation of this pathway, particularly through inhibition of BACE1 or γ-secretase, has been a major therapeutic strategy for modifying Alzheimer's progression.
