Amyloid beta-protein (Aβ42) is a 42-amino acid peptide derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP). It is a major component of amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients and is implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease due to its neurotoxic properties and ability to aggregate. Aβ42 levels in cerebrospinal fluid and blood are used as biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and monitoring. It is considered a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease, and drug development focuses on inhibiting its aggregation and promoting its clearance.
