Amylolytic enzymes in the small intestine, including pancreatic alpha-amylase, maltase-glucoamylase, and sucrase-isomaltase, are crucial for the digestion of glycogen and starch. These enzymes break down complex carbohydrates into absorbable monosaccharides, primarily glucose, which is essential for energy production. Inhibition of these enzymes, such as with alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, is a therapeutic strategy for managing postprandial hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
