Overview

Anaerobic bacterial DNA refers to the genetic material found within bacteria that thrive in environments devoid of molecular oxygen. These bacteria, known as anaerobes, either do not require oxygen for growth or may even be harmed by its presence. Their DNA encodes all the necessary information for survival, metabolism (often via fermentation), and adaptation to low-oxygen or oxygen-free conditions. Anaerobic bacteria often possess unique biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) responsible for producing secondary metabolites—compounds with potential bioactive properties.
