In clinical pharmacology, they are the primary targets of nitroimidazole antibiotics like metronidazole, which act as prodrugs (StatPearls, 2023). These drugs undergo reductive activation specifically within the anaerobic environment of the target cells, generating reactive oxygen species and free radicals that cause DNA damage and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis.
