Overview

The ancient vomeronasal 1 receptor pseudogene (ENSG00000287794, ANCV1RP) is a nonfunctional genetic element in humans that shares sequence similarity with vomeronasal 1 receptor genes, which are involved in pheromone detection in other mammals[1]. As a pseudogene, ANCV1RP carries disabling mutations (such as frameshifts or premature stop codons) and lacks the ability to produce a functional protein product[2]. Pseudogenes are often regarded as genomic "relics" arising from gene duplication or retrotransposition events, subsequently acquiring mutations that abolish their original function[2][3]. While most pseudogenes do not perform conventional biological functions, some can transcribe RNA capable of regulating related coding genes via mechanisms such as microRNA decoying or RNA interference, although there is no evidence that this specific pseudogene has such roles[3]. There are no known drugs that target or interact with this locus, and it is not considered a therapeutic target[1][2].
