Overview

There is no universal “anesthetic receptor”; each drug may preferentially interact with different proteins depending on its chemical structure and pharmacology. Thus, listing “Anesthetic” as an individual therapeutic target is scientifically inaccurate—it should be replaced with more precise terms such as “GABA_A receptor,” “NMDA receptor,” etc., when referring to mechanisms relevant for specific drugs within this class.

Mechanism of action

General anesthetics work primarily by: Potentiating inhibitory neurotransmission via GABA_A receptors (increasing chloride influx and hyperpolarizing neurons); Inhibiting excitatory neurotransmission via NMDA receptors and other ion channels; Modulating potassium channels to hyperpolarize neurons and reduce neuronal activity. No single mechanism applies universally; each agent may have distinct primary actions.
