Angiopoietins are a family of growth factors that play a central role in the regulation of angiogenesis, vascular maturation, and stability. The two primary members are Angiopoietin-1 (ANGPT1) and Angiopoietin-2 (ANGPT2), which exert their effects mainly through the Tie2 receptor tyrosine kinase on endothelial cells. Angiopoietin-like proteins (ANGPTLs) are structurally similar but do not bind the Tie receptors and regulate diverse processes including lipid metabolism and inflammation. The balance between ANGPT1 and ANGPT2 is crucial for normal vascular homeostasis versus pathological angiogenesis.
