Molecular Classification
Angiopoietin-like proteins (ANGPTLs), Secreted Glycoprotein
Other Names
ANGPTL3
Disease Roles
Angiopoietin-like 3 Overview
Angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) is a secreted glycoprotein primarily expressed in the liver. It plays a central role in lipid metabolism by inhibiting lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and endothelial lipase (EL), leading to increased plasma triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol. ANGPTL3 also promotes angiogenesis. Loss-of-function mutations in ANGPTL3 cause familial combined hypolipidemia. It is a therapeutic target for dyslipidemias, with monoclonal antibodies showing promise in reducing LDL cholesterol.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibition of ANGPTL3 to reduce plasma LDL cholesterol.
