Angiopoietin-like 7 is a secreted protein within the angiopoietin-like family. It contains an N-terminal coiled-coil domain and a C-terminal fibrinogen-like domain, is expressed in the cornea, trabecular meshwork, and is elevated in glaucoma. ANGPTL7 can inhibit angiogenesis in the cornea, maintaining its avascularity, but may stimulate angiogenesis under other pathological conditions such as cancer. It regulates extracellular matrix protein deposition and is upregulated by corticosteroids and TGF-β in ocular tissues. Its functions in other organs and its role as a therapeutic target or biomarker are actively being investigated, but it currently has no confirmed direct drug interactions or receptor partners.
For corticosteroids and TGF-β, mechanism involves upregulation of ANGPTL7, which stabilizes corneal avascularity and modifies extracellular matrix in trabecular meshwork cells
