Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a zinc-dependent metalloproteinase that plays a central role in the renin–angiotensin system (RAS), which regulates blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. ACE converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, and degrades bradykinin, a vasodilator. ACE is targeted pharmacologically by ACE inhibitors, which are widely used antihypertensive drugs.
ACE inhibitors block the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II and prevent the degradation of bradykinin, leading to vasodilation and decreased blood pressure.
