Overview

The Angiotensin II Type 2 Receptor (AT2) is a G protein-coupled receptor that is part of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). It generally counteracts the effects of the AT1 receptor, promoting vasodilation, sodium excretion, and inhibiting cell growth. It is highly expressed during fetal development but has lower expression in adults, although expression can increase under pathological conditions. Selective activation of the AT2 receptor may have therapeutic potential for cardiovascular and kidney protection, as well as anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits.

Mechanism of action

Agonists of the AT2 receptor promote vasodilation, natriuresis, anti-proliferation, and apoptosis, counteracting the effects of AT1 receptor activation. They may also mediate anti-inflammatory effects and improve insulin sensitivity.
