Overview

The Angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R) is a G protein-coupled receptor and one of the two main receptors for angiotensin II, a key hormone in the renin–angiotensin system (RAS). While the AT1 receptor mediates most classical effects of angiotensin II (vasoconstriction, cell growth), the AT2R often counterbalances these actions, contributing to vasodilation, inhibiting cell growth, and promoting apoptosis. It is highly expressed in fetal tissues but decreases after birth, being upregulated in adults under pathological conditions. Recent research focuses on developing selective ligands to harness its protective properties against hypertension-induced organ damage and other conditions.
