Overview

The angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1, also known as AGTR1) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that plays a central role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which regulates blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance, and systemic vascular resistance. It is the primary mediator of the physiological and pathophysiological effects of angiotensin II. Blockade of AT1 receptors using selective antagonists ("angiotensin receptor blockers," ARBs) forms a cornerstone therapy for hypertension, heart failure, diabetic nephropathy and other cardiovascular diseases.
