Overview

Angiotensinogen (AGT) is a glycoprotein produced primarily by the liver and serves as the unique precursor for all angiotensin peptides in the renin–angiotensin system (RAS), which plays a central role in regulating blood pressure, fluid, and electrolyte balance. AGT is the sole substrate for renin, which cleaves it to produce angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted to angiotensin II, the main effector peptide of RAS.

Mechanism of action

Indirectly targeted by ACE inhibitors and AT1 receptor blockers which reduce AngII production or block its effects.
