Overview

Anion transport proteins are integral membrane proteins responsible for the movement of inorganic and organic anions across biological membranes. They play essential roles in physiological processes such as acid-base balance, CO₂ transport, and cellular homeostasis. The most well-studied example is the Band 3 anion transport protein (also known as AE1 or SLC4A1), which mediates chloride/bicarbonate exchange in red blood cells and kidney cells. Mutations or dysfunctions in these proteins can lead to various diseases.
