Overview

ANK2 antisense RNA 1 (ANK2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the ANK2 (Ankyrin 2) locus[4]. As an antisense RNA, its primary presumed function is the post-transcriptional or epigenetic regulation of the adjacent ANK2 gene, commonly by RNA-RNA hybridization, blocking translation, recruiting chromatin modifiers, or affecting mRNA stability[1]. Antisense RNAs, including lncRNAs like ANK2-AS1, can influence gene expression locally (cis) or at distant genomic loci (trans), potentially modifying epigenetic marks or regulating alternative splicing[1]. There are no well-established therapeutic drugs, biomarker roles, or safety concerns associated with ANK2-AS1. Its specific disease relevance is currently unknown, in contrast to its sense gene ANK2, which plays a role in epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, and cardiac arrhythmia[2][6]. No concrete evidence currently designates ANK2-AS1 as a direct therapeutic target.
