Overview

Ankyrin repeat and SOCS box protein 11 (ASB11) is a member of the ankyrin repeat and SOCS box family that acts as a substrate-recognition subunit within Elongin–Cullin–SOCS (ECS) E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes. ASB11 localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and mediates the ubiquitination—and subsequent proteasomal degradation—of select proteins such as Ribophorin 1 (an integral part of the OST glycosylation complex). ASB11 also targets pro-apoptotic proteins such as BIK for degradation, regulating cell survival in response to ER stress and the unfolded protein response. Functionally, ASB11 is crucial for maintenance of cell progenitor compartments (notably in neural and muscle tissues) and inhibits terminal cell differentiation, likely through activation of Notch signaling. This makes ASB11 a key molecular gatekeeper of compartment size and regeneration in vertebrate tissues.
