Ankyrin repeat and SOCS box protein 16 (ASB16) is a member of the ASB protein family, which contains ankyrin repeat sequences for protein-protein interactions and a SOCS box domain known for coupling substrate proteins to the cellular degradation machinery via interaction with elongin B and C in ECS-type E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes. ASB16 may act as a substrate-recognition subunit for the recruitment and ubiquitination of specific cellular proteins, hence regulating their stability and turnover. It is implicated in pathways such as antigen processing and general protein metabolism and is thought to play roles in cancer, especially in the context of protein degradation. ASB16 itself is not currently targeted by any marketed drugs, and its direct role as a therapeutic target requires further exploration.
