Ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 22 (ANKRD22)

Ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 22 (ANKRD22) is a member of the ankyrin repeat family, characterized by four ankyrin motifs, and encodes a 191-amino acid protein that is highly conserved[2][3]. It primarily localizes to the mitochondrial membrane, though a fraction may translocate to the nucleus under certain conditions[5][7]. ANKRD22 participates in key cellular processes including cell cycle regulation and metabolic reprogramming, promoting cancer cell proliferation by upregulating the transcription factor E2F1 and influencing downstream genes involved in cell cycle progression[1][8]. It is upregulated in several tumors, such as non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer, where its high expression correlates with poor clinical outcome, increased proliferation, and tumor progression. Conversely, in some cancers like prostate cancer, low expression is linked to unfavorable prognosis, suggesting tissue-specific roles[2][8].
