Ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 37 (ANKRD37) is a protein strongly induced by hypoxic conditions in various cell types, functioning as a transcriptional target of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) signaling pathway. ANKRD37 is localized in the cytosol, mitochondrion, and nucleoplasm. It is consistently upregulated in response to physiological hypoxia, serving as a marker of cellular adaptation to low oxygen environments. In specific contexts such as the placenta and renal carcinoma, ANKRD37 modulates trophoblast invasion and participates in metabolic reprogramming associated with hypoxia. It interacts physically with the protein Fem1b, which can mediate its degradation and may be involved in differentiation processes. Despite its clear role in stress response pathways, no evidence supports the classification of ANKRD37 as a receptor, enzyme, or direct drug target.
